Melanorosaurus war ein stämmiger, pflanzenfressender Dinosaurier und lebte während der Trias im heutigen Südafrika. Er hatte einen recht massigen Körper und ist einer der frühesten bekannten Vorfahren der Sauropoden. Der Schädel des Melanorosaurus war etwa 25 cm lang, das Maul war etwas zugespitzt und der Schädel besaß, von oben betrachtet, eine dreieckige Form. Die Prämaxilla hatte vier Zähne auf jeder Seite, dies ist ein Merkmal der primitiven Sauropodomorpha. Der Oberkiefer enthielt auf jeder Seite des Kiefers 19 Zähne. Die Knochen besaßen Hohlräume, die dazu beitrugen, das Gewicht zu reduzieren.
